After being pressured by the GOP regarding Hillary & Uranium One, A.G. Jeff Sessions actually sent a letter where it indicates DOJ will "evaluate certain issues" flagged by Republican lawmakers. Although according to this "Vanity Fair" article, Sessions might have had ulterior motives in sending the letter:
"Benjamin Wittes, editor of the Lawfare blog, argues Sessions’s letter is actually a convoluted way for the Justice Department to, ultimately, reaffirm its independence, by allowing the federal prosecutors to decide against an investigation. “What I think DOJ may be doing here is declaring a process in which senior career prosecutors will review the matter and make recommendations to the AG or the DAG . . . Theoretically, this could lead to a special counsel,” he wrote on Twitter. “In practice, however, it will not. The reason is that the allegations are not substantial and—at least insofar as I understand them—they will not serve as a proper predicate for a criminal investigation, let alone require a special counsel.”
In short, I think this letter is best understood not as a hint to Trump that Sessions will do as the President wants, but as a way of shunting the matter to a mechanism that will enable him not to act—or, to be more precise, that will enable Rod Rosenstein not to act.”
Besides having no precedent in modern political history, this is all a clear effort from the Trump administration & its allies to distract from the #TrumpRussia investigation. Most likely, because reports in the media have now extended to include Don Trump junior and Wikileaks.
Let's remember, Wikileaks published thousands of emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee. & according to U.S. intelligence agencies, the hack was perpetrated by Russian operatives. Thus, it's understandable why Trump would want to distract. Especially, since there are now press reports of communication between Wikileaks & Don Trump junior (as well as potentially Trump himself) during the 2016 campaign:
“Hiya, it’d be great if you guys could comment on/push this story,” WikiLeaks said in a message to Mr. Trump on Oct. 3, 2016, that included a quote from Mrs. Clinton in which she said she wanted to “just drone” Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder.
“Already did that earlier today,” Mr. Trump said in response. “It’s amazing what she can get away with.”
In a message a week later, WikiLeaks asked Mr. Trump to have his father tweet a link to a site where users could search through hacked emails from Democrats.
“There’s many great stories the press are missing and we’re sure some of your follows will find it,” WikiLeaks said, adding that the group had just released more emails stolen from Mrs. Clinton’s campaign chairman, John D. Podesta.
Mr. Trump did not respond. Fifteen minutes later, however, his father tweeted: “Very little pick-up by the dishonest media of incredible information provided by WikiLeaks. So dishonest! Rigged system!”
The only people who know what's really going on with #TrumpRussia are Mueller & his team. However, if Trump & the GOP can speculate & demand answers from a private citizen like Hillary Clinton, in a free society we all have a right & duty to speculate & demand answers from the president of the United States.
