Location scout for Netflix series "Narcos" is shot & killed in Mexico

In the last scene of "Narcos" season 3 (set in a Laredo property near the Rio Grande), Javier Peña's dad Chucho asks him if he's gonna work for the DEA in Mexico, after Javier spent several years working as a DEA agent in Colombia.
"It's different there" Chucho says referring to Mexico: "son, let me tell you..." but Javier interrupts Chucho by saying "Dad, I've done enough... I'm through".

According to published reports, "Narcos" season 4 will explore the origins of Mexico's Juarez cartel which presumably means Javier Peña (character played by Pedro Pascal) changes his mind.
Regardless, yesterday, the tragic news about the murder of Mexican location scout Carlos Muñoz Portal got me thinking about that last piece of dialogue on the season finale of season 3.

All three seasons of "Narcos" (streaming on Netflix) have been excellent: the dialogue, the actors, the screenplays, and yes, the locations. But I never thought about the dangers associated with this type of production until now. & about the challenge it must be to tell a story about the brutal but still ongoing drugwar in Mexico.

R.I.P. Carlos Muñoz Portal.

Variety has an informative article about the murder:

Mexican location scout Carlos Muñoz Portal was shot to death in a violent region in central Mexico Monday while scouting for season four of Netflix’s hit show “Narcos.” The seasoned scout, who worked for Stacy Perskie’s Mexico City-based production company Redrum, has a slew of high profile credits to his name, including, “Sicario,” “Spectre,” “Fast & Furious” and “Apocalypto.”

Netflix issued the following statement: “We are aware of the passing of Carlos Muñoz Portal, a well-respected location scout, and send our condolences to his family. The facts surrounding his death are still unknown as authorities continue to investigate.

Variety's article has a reference about the potential direction of Season four's storyline:

"Netflix’s season 4 is said to be exploring the origins of Mexico’s infamous Juarez cartel just as season 3 focused on the rise and fall of Colombia’s Cali cartel and heralded the shift of the drug wars to Mexico."
